How to Post on WordPress: Blog Management 101

A WordPress blog is the premier place to share creative content and become an authority on a topic.

If you’ve launched your blog as of recent, you need to learn how to post on WordPress. Posting is your site’s way of signaling search engines and asking for visitors.

When you publish a post, that content goes live on your WordPress blog right away. By way of SEO plugin or software, search engines receive an electronic notification. They then catalog your blog content, making it visible to users searching for that topic.

Start a New Post

To get started on your first post you’ll need to sign into your WordPress user dashboard.

Once signed in, scroll down the left side of the dashboard and look for the pushpin icon. Look for the word “posts”. It’s right next to it. That’s where you start your first post and all future posts.

Hover your mouse over the pushpin and a list of options should appear:

  • All Posts
  • Add New
  • Categories
  • Tags

Select at add new. Your mouse cursor should land right in your first block—the add title block. Add your title then move on by clicking into the next content field.

Content

To start adding text (content), hit enter or click underneath the title into the content area.

Once your cursor lands in the content are you may start creating. Place your header first by selecting the header icon. Then, begin working on your text by choosing the paragraph icon.

Keep in mind the Gutenberg editor is a smart guide. Pay attention to your editing tools—small icons at the top of the box. You can manipulate the text, font, and paragraph settings as you would in a Word doc.

Uploading Images and Video into a Post

If you need to add media and images, follow the same posting direction for titles and content.

Move down further into the content area, select the add media icon, then choose a media option.

WordPress allows media from differences sources. To simplify the process for its users, they can drag images right into the uploader from a desktop. For shortcuts, users may use code options.

For example, typing “/image” will prompt an option to upload an image. The image posts directly inside the content area. Users also have to option of creating image galleries before posting new content.

For links to video, hit the chain link icon and paste a copy of a link. Hit enter and WordPress does the rest by interpreting the code in the link. If it’s a Youtube video, WordPress automatically uploads it as a Youtube video and such with other media options.

Adding Categories and Tags

After you’ve concluded creating your content, you need to sort it before you post it. Sorting allows you to categorize posts according to the topic.

On the right-hand side of your posting window are more smart tools and icons. There you have the option to choose a category and a tag. Set those up before you begin your first post.

Use the dropdown to choose the category or tag you want.

Publish Your Post

With every piece of written content, follow the golden rule of writing you learned in grade school.

Proofread and preview before you post. Read through your post out loud. Sometimes the ears pick up mistakes the eyes overlook. Make necessary corrections then select the preview button.

How your blog post appears in the preview is exactly how users will see it. If you don’t like it, go back and make edits.

Also, review your Meta. Meta tags contain website specific information for the search engines.

When you’re ready, click the publish button and go live with your post.
